Yogjakarta wants out of Indonesia

The brother of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X made a threat to Indon lawmakers that there is a potential to split the nation.
The lawmakers are currently debating to draft a law regarding the special territory of Yogyakarta in which the Indon government is seeking to end a tradition that automatically appoints the sultan as the governor of the region.

The brother of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X made a threat during a meeting with the lawmakers at his royal family palace in Yogyakarta.

Joyokusumo said the kingdom of Yogyakarta was established 190 years before the Republic of Indonesia was proclaimed on 17 Aug 1945, the ruling sultan at that time, Hamengkubuwono IX had declared that the kingdom would join the young nation on 5 September 1945.

President Sukarno said that in return for the support of the kingdom in the republic's struggle for independance, Yogyakarta was granted special territory status, much like the Malay special rights in Malaysia.

The central government of Indonesia does not respect this and wants to perish the special rights given to the kingdom. In reply, Joyokusumo said since the government now is disowning the territory, it is better for them to live independently.
